For a six year old, Hai or Hi?

This year, 93% of all public elementary schools in Japan have English education, and 75% of schools start English classes from first grade. English classes in most schools are conducted by singing English songs or playing games.

But the trend of more and earlier English education also met strong oppositions, some argue that for young students focus should be on their native language (Japanese) education, making English into a mandatory course or not is still under intense scrutiny of the national education board.

Perhaps the parents should be given options for languages: ie. English, Chinese, Hindi or one of the other languages with a large number of speakers. I however, support early elementary language learning as children can pick up the tones, and learn languages faster than adults.
